The 100 best places to live and launch |
|

(FORTUNE Small Business) -- When Peter Gompert, 36, tired of life in sprawling Phoenix, he simply packed up and headed for Boise, which turned out to be the perfect place to launch his software service company. When Nelson Komaiko, 59, could no longer take the Chicago winters, he crafted a list of priorities, such as a warm climate and no state income tax. Komaiko wound up in the Dallas area, where he now owns a tax consulting firm.

Researchers say the community`s livability and relatively inexpensive housing put it in the West`s top 20 suburbs. |
|

When you think of affordable Boise suburbs, which towns come to mind? Nampa? Garden City?
What about Eagle?
That may be the last town most local folks would name.
But BusinessWeek magazine just pegged Eagle as one of the top 20 "best affordable suburbs in the West."
Turns out Eagle`s median home price of $569,900 is cheap, its almost 25- minute average commute time is quick, and its slightly higher-than-average cost of living is low. Relatively speaking.
"What we tried to do was find the top affordable communities, so it`s a balance between affordability and livability," said Bert Sperling, president of Portland-based research group Sperling`s Best Places, which did the study. "Eagle has been growing very quickly and becoming very desirable. For someone from say, California, $500,000 is going to seem a bargain."
Eagle`s quality of life, low crime rates and good schools also helped — Eagle made the cut with a school test-score rating two points below the national average and a violent crime rating 18 points below the national average.

No End In Sight For Idaho`s Growth |
|

BOISE — With all due respect to Phoenix, Las Vegas and Orlando, the heart of American`s biggest economic boom is right here in Idaho..
In Idaho, the state with the nation`s fastest-growing economy, homebuilding hasn`t crashed as it has across much of the USA, and a two-decade run of prosperity continues.
Chalk it up, in large part, to chips — computer chips and potato chips. And to a state whose climate and rugged outdoor beauty are attracting highly mobile, white-collar newcomers who could work or live most anywhere..
Idaho has drawn national attention from the recent sex-sting arrest of Larry Craig, its senior U.S. senator, and, in the 1990s, from occasional standoffs between law enforcement and white supremacists. What`s less known is that Idaho has been competing with Arizona, Nevada and Florida to be the USA`s most vibrant boom state. And unlike those hot-weather states, Idaho is having a boom that shows little sign of fading.
Idaho has been tops among states in economic growth since 2003. It has ranked high nearly every year since 1987, a run of good times unmatched by any other state. Even the recessions of 1991 and 2001 didn`t stop growth.

Best States to Find a Job |
|

Some job seekers approach their job hunt by choosing the career they want and following it wherever it might take them. Other candidates prefer to pick their dream location and find a job when they get there.
Unfortunately, it isn`t that easy. When you choose where you want to live and work before you actually have a job, several factors can affect whether or not you find what you`re looking for. You must consider such things as cost of living, state taxes and prominent industries in the area, to name a few.
Perhaps the biggest factor to consider when you`re job hunting in different states is the unemployment rate. The national unemployment rate as of July 2007 is 4.6 percent, which means 4.6 percent of willing workers are lacking a job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
